Why everyone should be paid a living wage
When I wrote my living wage article months before the last G.E. there was no ‘general consensus’ within other political parties about achieving a living wage and not just a minimum wage. However, we are not there yet – the current minimum wage will only be £7.20 from next April and only if you are 25 or over so young people 18-24 will continue to be discriminated against. You may have seen my post urging a commissioner within the Equalities and Human Rights Commission to do something about this – it is long overdue and is now on their radar – we shall see.
In the meantime, one of the campaigns which will aid the movement to more people being able to achieve a living wage in the shorter term is Unison’s Ethical Care Charter, which in a nutshell:
Ensures that workers providing home care to the elderly and disabled receive a living wage and brings and end to zero hours contracts within this industry, and ensures that people receiving home care get a minimum 30 minute visit. Currently the minimum visit time is 15 minutes and as most (if not all) home care workers who are not working within an “Ethical Care” Borough or City do not receive pay for travelling between their client homes they currently receive less than the minimum wage and are constantly pushed for time. Islington & Southwark were the first Councils to sign up in December 2013:

We all need to urge our Councils to become Ethical Care Councils – I would urge you to pressure your MP, and to use our network of Green Local Councillors to progress the living wage agenda in this way – if you don’t have a Green Councillor in your area you could see if any of your Labour Councillors are members of Unison (I have spoken with one in Lewisham who is keen to get this on the Council agenda this Autumn) and get them to table the motion and seek cross party support.

Lewisham Council unanimously passed a resolution to become a No-TTIP Zone on 24th June.
Bin the Bill Green (January 2015): Here is a photograph taken within the House of Commons of Roisin (Bromley), Sian (Camden) and me on a mission to green card our MP’s to persuade them to vote against the Infrastructure Bill (esp the Fracking under any private land clause). I spoke with Heidi Alexander (Lewisham East) and urged her to get the Labour party to look into why France, Bulgaria, New York and Ireland have banned fracking and use these arguments to ban fracking in England (especially after the Blackpool earthquake), and to look to longer term funding of tidal power. As you can see we were not quite the force of those Lancashire anti-fracking nanas – but as women we are all sisters of the same cause. Here is more information on the amazing nanas:

Re ‘living wage’ article, thanks for highlighting Unison’s Ethical Care Charter. From my own 2005-2006 experience as a care worker doing cover duties mainly, I recognise that the first two points of that Ethical Care Charter:
“1. Give workers the freedom to provide appropriate care and be given the time to talk to their clients.
“2. Allocate clients the same homecare worker(s) wherever possible”
certainly complement each other.
Yet point 1 would be much better phrased as
“1. Give workers the freedom to provide appropriate care and be given the time to talk with and listen to their clients.”
Take the case of ‘Ian’ with a severe speech impairment. It could be a steep learning curve for the care workers to ‘tune in’ to what he was saying accurately. My own sessions with him were 3 hour sessions for which I was paid £7.81 per hour for very demanding work in terms of listening to and verifying what he said. Some time after the worker that I had covered for returned to working with ‘Ian’, I saw him at a social evening for workers and service users and was amazed at the warmth of his greeting, and confided that to one of his other workers. The other worker responded, “The thing about you, Alan, is that you care. You take the time to listen and you don’t just marshal him about according to the session label [eg, cleaning] as ‘just in time management’ agency workers who don’t know him generally do. Making the effort to comprehend is important. One day someone said to ‘Ian’, ‘Hi! How are you doing?’ And before properly assessing what ‘Ian’ had said, the greeter said, ‘Ah, that’s great! You must be really proud of yourself.'”
But what had ‘Ian’ actually said? “My mum’s just died.”
Tragic as that reported incident might be, consider point 5 of the Ethical Care Charter:
“5. Match the time allocated to visits to the particular needs of the client. In general, 15-minute visits will not be used as they undermine the dignity of the clients.”
I am looking forward to meeting Matthew Egan who is the lead officer for Unison’s Ethical Care Charter at the Green Party’s Take City Hall event on 5th September – wouldn’t it be great if all Local Councils become Ethical Care Councils – what a tremendous difference it would make to both those receiving care and also those giving the care.

Neighbourhood Forums are a good place to start and Community groups in your area, as well as organised groups along themes such as TTIP campaign: Global Justice Now, Friends of the Earth, Housing Activist groups in your area, Unison reps – for pay issues, benefits, NHS etc Also see People v PFI for privatisation of NHS agenda.
Lots of activists within the Green Party – join and meet them at London Fed. meetings etc.
